Our Values
We are committed to preserving and promoting Tigrayan culture, language, and traditions by offering impactful programs, high-quality services, and opportunities for growth that strengthen and empower our community.
Our History
The first large migration of Tigrayans to the United States began in the 1970s and 1980s, as many fled genocide, famine, political persecution, and marginalization under the Ethiopian government. Like other communities across the country, Tigrayans were scattered, searching for safety and opportunity. In the Bay Area, those who arrived found not just refuge, but the foundation for a thriving community that continues to grow today.
The Tigray Community Bay Area was created to give Tigrayans a home away from home. Our first generation faced enormous challenges—language barriers, cultural adjustments, economic hardships, and systemic discrimination. Yet through resilience and collective support, Tigrayans came together to build a network of belonging. We uplifted one another socially, educationally, and economically, while also helping our children navigate the complexity of growing up between two worlds.
Today, the Bay Area is home to one of the largest concentrations of Tigrayans in the United States. While our community thrives here, we remain deeply connected to our families and people abroad, many of whom continue to face injustice, displacement, and humanitarian crises. These realities shape our identity and our work: to preserve our culture, to advocate for justice, and to build a stronger future for the next generation of Tigrayans in the Bay Area.
